OUTDOOR PLAY SPACE PLANNING COMMITTEE
I would like to invite families and community members to become part of an Outdoor Play Space Planning Committee that we would like to start at Westbrook Middle School.
We have the rare and wonderful opportunity at WMS to have recess for all 4 grades. Not many middle schools can pull that off but we do because we believe that the physical, social and emotional benefits of daily play, especially outdoors, is essential to the learning and the development of our students. Our school is set up well in many ways and we have ample space for kids to socialize but the available play space is more limited. We have a field that has great potential but is often too wet to play on, we don't have great play features (just a few swings) and our primary play space, a tarred parking lot, is not at all ideal.
We are seeking interested family and community members to join us in planning for some alterations and improvements that will lead to a more enjoyable and rewarding recess experience for our students. Our task will begin with reviewing existing spaces and then move into planning for improvements. The last phase will look to financing the recommended improvements and we have a revitalized PTO that is already pledging to support that effort. Meetings will be virtual unless there is an important reason to come together for an in person meeting. Initial thinking is that early evening twice per month would be a good starting point for meetings.
