THE WESTBROOK COMMUNITY
is located
in Cumberland County, just minutes from
downtown Portland, Westbrook covers 12.8 square
miles with a population of 16,142.
With an annual budget of over $33 million, the
Westbrook School Department provides education
to approximately 2465 area students and employs
over 460 staff members including 255 certified
teachers, 55 certified education technicians and
27 administrators.
The school district is comprised of 7 schools,
multiple use buildings and superbly maintained
athletic fields. A
new 600
student middle school
and playfields which
includes a 1,000 seat Performing Art
Center which was opened in 2010.
The
Westbrook Regional Vocational Center
provides outstanding vocational education to
approximately 363 students. Over 36% of their
students are from local area sending schools
(Gorham, Scarborough, Standish and Windham).
The Westbrook School Department has a
comprehensive
K 12 Alternative Learning Program and
school counseling services.
Westbrook's Adult and Community Education
programs provide a variety of offerings from
academics, high school completion to personal
growth and activity.
The Westbrook School Department in collaboration
with the Windham School Department have
developed a
21st
Century Community Learning Center
to provide after-school and summer school
tutoring, mentoring opportunities, parent /
family support activities, and adventure-based
learning to students experiencing a cycle of
academic hardships.
As a stand alone district, Westbrook continues
to voluntarily collaborate with the City of
Westbrook and area school districts to realize
operational savings while preserving its
exceptional quality of education to Westbrook's
students. This partnership including a new Chief
Financial Officer for both city and the school
district, new Director of Operation that
consolidated transportation and facilities
management for both city and the school
district, new shared Human Resources,
Technology, and Legal Counsel for both city and
the school district.
Under leadership of Superintendent Dr. Reza
Namin, Westbrook School Department has been able
to meet the fiscal challenges to a very health
balanced budget with minimum impact to the tax
payers while reducing the student dropout by
half, implementation of Teaching For
Understanding in Partnership with
Harvard University Wide World On line, Graduate
School of Education, and improve the entire
culture and climate of the school community at
large.
